Surrounded by the vineyards and cherry trees from Tenute Pacelli there is a unique example of neoclassical architecture in Calabria. An eighteenth century hunting lodge that belonged to the barons La Costa. About the project

Tenute Pacelli, situated among the hills near Cosenza, below the Massiccio del Pollino, was owned by the barons La Costa, nobles with Calabrian origins from which descended the maternal family of Francesco Pacelli.
From the beginning of the twentieth century the old hunting lodge of the XVIII century had been chosen by the family as a rural residence, and only in the '70s, the Baron Gaetano La Costa decided to plant vineyards selecting exclusively Italian grape varieties - he loved Chianti and Barbera wines - such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Malvasia which form the oldest part of the vineyard.
After his death, the estate with all the vineyard was inherited by his nephew Francesco and, since then, it has become a little jewel thanks to the women of the family: his wife Clara and his daughters Carla and Laura.

But the hunting lodge, during the time, has lost its beauty. For this reason Carla and Laura want to rediscover it: not just for sentimental value but also as a symbol of neoclassical architecture, unique and preciuos for this area. The goal is to open it to the public and turn it into a tourist accommodation. A magical place, because it is surrounded by vineyards and cherry trees. A place of history and passion. Of stories and legends that are waiting to be told again thanks to your support.

The Winemaker

Carla and Laura Pacelli are sisters. They are not winemakers only, but they represent the almost all-feminine company's image. A company that, first of all, is a family, made up of dynamic people, ready to fulfill their dream, united by the same passion: the love for the land.
Carla and Laura want to valorize their little-known wine area, Calabria, a magic region full of richness and uniqueness.
Here, in the heart of Northern Calabria, between the rocky coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the cool mountains that dominate the province of Cosenza, you can find Tenute Pacelli, rich and fertile farm houses of ancient roots and innovative strength.

Finding the wine - Part 4

She was coming down the stairs of La Costa house, when her brother broke into the yard, yelling furiously, still wearing his hunting clothes: "Claretta, Clara, Claaraaaa!" - "Lodovico, what happened?" - "We have to call the police, the commissioner, the army if it is necessary!"

Clara, accustomed to the outbursts of range of her brother, gently touched his elbow, and said: “Lodovico, calm down, please..."  -  “Claretta! The thieves entered in my hunting lodge!".

Claretta doubted that a thief had been able to think of finding something valuable in a hunting lodge, in any case she asked her brother what these “thieves” had stolen. "The wine! MY wine!" the Baron exclaimed, offended: he did not understand how his sister could remain impassive to a story like that.

Furiously he walked up the stairs and rushed to the room of the family weapons.

Finding the wine - Part 3

Claretta was checking the pantry with Carmela, paper and pen in hand writing what they needed to buy in the small shops of the town. They had potatoes, flour and cheese for at least a month, a huge amount of fruit from their orchard; the cured meats in the cellar were enough to feed an entire country. There were also several liters of oil produced in the olive oil mill.

"What do we have to write in the grocery list?" - asked impatiently Carmela, who thought there’s no need to go shopping in town. Claretta shrugged her shoulders and replied: "We need coffee and sugar. That quality that the Baron loves so much...". Actually she had a desire to go to the new store of hats and gloves that had just opened in the downtown of Cosenza. Her sister Anna had already visited it and she told her that it was fantastic, teasing the curiosity of Claretta who was so bored after the long summer in the Calabrian residence, away from her friends and lost in a picturesque country, but too quiet for her. So, ignoring Carmela that was gabbling, she arranged the car for the trip.

Finding the wine - Part 2

He was curious to taste the new tobacco in his pipe, paired with a generous glass of the new wine, produced in his vineyard, and finally ready after a month in barrels. Some months before, Lodovico had decided to buy a half-dozen barrels from his French cousin, and now he could not wait to taste the wine, aged in wood.

So he went to the winery, on the ground floor, where the sunlight barely filtered from two tiny windows. Here the grapes of an unknown variety were resting; two centuries ago, the people of this land called this special wine “Tèmeso”. In small oak barrels, it was fermenting, continuing its mysterious evolution. Lodovico could almost hear it muttering, anxious to see the light through a crystal glass. He leaned over the first barrel and pulled out the cork to spill the wine in a ceramic carafe. What was his surprise when he realized that nothing came out from the barrel!

He put it upside down and shook it: nothing, not even a drop. He rushed to check the other five barrels: they were empty too.

The wine had mysteriously disappeared...

Finding the wine - Part 1

The Baron Lodovico La Costa cleaned his boots before entering the Hunting Lodge of the family, a sacred place for him, dedicated exclusively to his passions, forbidden to his wife and sisters. The huge stairways intertwined for three floors and brought to a maze of spare rooms where fireplaces were burning.

The three Greyhounds followed Lodovico wagging their tails waiting for a caress, but the Baron was anxious to relax after the long walk in the woods, sitting in his comfortable armchair near the fireplace.
