An old vineyard and its precious vines need to be saved to preserve their genetic heritage. For this reason, Il Calamaio wants to preserve its land and its fruits by planting a field of cuttings from the wild vines. An ambitious and scientific project to preserve both the nearly extinct Bonamico (literally, "good friend") vine and the local riches that market logic is sweeping away.

About the project

When we took over the vineyard, it had been abandoned for about ten years. We decided to try to salvage its vines since we were assuming that we’d find some hidden treasures among those plants.

Just as we predicted, we discovered the Bonamico vine, which is almost extinct. A precious vine typical of Tuscany, our beautiful land, known around the world for its landscape and excellent wines.

When we discovered this ancient vine, we were so excited.

But the vineyard is old, around 60 or 70 years, and many of its plants have died over the years. Now we risk losing a precious genetic heritage. The vines must continue to produce this ancient wine. So we created our project: We want to plant a field of wild vines and then transplant the trimmings of the existing vines to create clones of the Bonamico plants. In this way, the vines can reproduce and live for much longer, and our territory will once again produce a wine typical of this magical area.

Please support us in this project: Let's save the Bonamico (literally, "good friend") vines!

The Winemaker

Samuele Bianchi, engineer, winemaker, or both? Because of his passion for wine, he bought a vineyard in 2003 to produce his own varieties. His hobby soon became a business, and he began designing a winery.

Today, he believes that the future of winemaking lies in a sustainable, biological revolution. So, he’s committed to running a small winery that produces premium quality certified organic wines.

From the beginning, his slogan has been “A small business with a great passion.”

The vine awakens

The awakening time has arrived for Bonamico! Our friend Samuele tells us how the plant will grow and which branches will bear fruit.

During this time of the year we proceed with the "scacchiatura", a system to eliminate all those gems that will not serve along the development of the plant.

An amazing plant, the Bonamico one, that must be saved and recovered!

The pruning process

It is now time for the Calamaio to start the pruning process. During the Winter, the vines shed their leaves and are in full hibernation making it the perfect time to start pruning. It is also time for our Bonamico friend to prepare himself for the next season.

I have briefly demonstrated the pruning stages by using a very old plant, around 50 yrs old, which was grafted 3 years ago with the precious Bonamico vine, showing the plant before and after the pruning process in order to clearly display our aim. We fully maintain the plant’s nature which has grown through time by the nourishment of the land from our  hills.

We reproduce what has already been created making sure that we do not force the plants in order to fully maintain the taste and aroma of the original vines.

How is our Bonamico?

I went in the vineyards, I wanted to check our Bonamico.

Take a look at these plants.

Are we almost ready for the harvest?

How is our Bonamico?

A bunch of Bonamico

Say hello to a bunch of Bonamico.
Despite the cold and rainy spring that caused the loss of some flowers and then berries you can begin to understand why it is called Bonamico.
The plant produces a lot of big bunches, so sometimes we have to go and cut off some of them to ensure a good quality of the grapes.
Bonamico sounds like a good friend: a good friend to the winemaker because it always gives a great deal of fruit.
